Remember Interactive Panoramas?

Well with the years behind us we certainly do. Interactive Panoramas (typically called QTVR (Quicktime Virtual Reality)) put simply are self-contained images that give you the ability to interactively rotate around one spot allowing to explore a scene through 360 degrees. Well as a salute to all things retro we would like to question:

What ever happened to Interactive Panoramas?

I imagine, rather like 3D movies, that it is a sign our ever changing trends and professional requirements. It’s worth mentioning that with the emerging predominance of high speed broadband the resolution of such images has greatly improved. Perhaps, like with so many visual delights, clients are dismayed by the worrying costs attached. Well, once again, m3fx would like to put a few facts straight.

Let’s start with the basics; there are typically two types of Panorama (QTVR) images:

  1. Real life photographed Panoramas.
  2. Fully CG Panoramas.

The first is explained with the help of an example, courtesy of Google Street View, click here (this is where m3fx spend a lot of time!). Yep, been there done that. Surely if Google have invested a rumoured 500 million Euros then there must be a value in it beyond a fad.

The second, strangely enough, is best explained with an example too (place the mouse on the image, left click, hold and drag from left to right):

This movie requires Flash Player 9

Now what if we were to combine these two types and, further still, verify the process.

Here’s the resulting interactive image:

This movie requires Flash Player 9

Presuming that you are familiar with verified images, it may be of interest that the only added steps to produce a Verified Panorama are as follows:

  1. Additional photographs are taken on site to make up the panorama.
  2. Single verified image is combined with additional photographs to create a 360 degree interactive panorama.

N.B. Although the steps are simple, it is worth mentioning that it is a cost effective solution when bolted onto our usual verified service which is a technical exercise that requires precision equipment and meticulous procedures.

Now come on, let’s go Panorama crazy!
